“For complex diseases, most drugs are highly ineffective, and the success rate of drug discovery is in a constant decline”, says Prof Dr Harald H.H.W. Schmidt, pioneer of so-called Systems Medicine. He is going to address the reasons for this development, including false incentives in science, and solutions for patient-centred medicine, in his lecture in Dortmund on Thursday, November 3, 1 pm.
Schmidt's research focuses on redefining diseases and organising medicine with via Big Data. The 63-year-old heads the Department of Pharmacology and Personalised Medicine at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at Maastricht University (Netherlands). He is a medical doctor and pharmacologist, a non-fiction author and has received several awards in the past, for example from the European Research Council.
