The research group ERC-Sulfaging investigates the connection between ageing processes and so-called gasotransmitter signalling. The researchers focus on the signal transmission in cells via hydrogen sulfide.

In this young field of research, the researchers want to decode the exact mechanisms of hydrogen sulfide actions, for example with the help of worms. Their work on metabolic biochemistry provides important insights, for example for a better diagnosis and treatment of age-related diseases in the future. For this purpose, the European Research Council (ERC) has awarded Dr habil. Miloš Filipović the Consolidator Grant.

Sulfaging has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 864921).

Prolonged Health with a Compound Found in Mushrooms?

Is an active ingredient from shiitake or oyster mushrooms able to prolong ageing health? An international team of researchers led by Dr habil. Miloš Filipović has unravelled the mechanism of action of ergothioneine. The results show how the substance improves the health of ageing animals. A human study is currently being planned.

“Moving to ISAS changed my whole view on mass spectrometry”

Prof Dr Miloš Filipović is researching the connection between ageing processes and gasotransmitter signalling pathways, in particular hydrogen sulphide. The biochemist headed the ERC Sulfaging group at ISAS from October 2020 until February 2025, at which point he was appointed to the University of Glasgow in Scotland. In this interview, he looks back on the past four and a half years in Dortmund and talks about his experiences at ISAS.

Hydrogen Sulfide: The Surprising Molecule That Regulates Life's Vital Functions & Fights Aging

Hydrogen sulfide is considered highly toxic. Nevertheless, the foul-smelling gas fulfills many vital functions in our cells. As a gasotransmitter, for example, it can transmit signals within and between cells. But hydrogen sulfide also plays an important role in the oxygen supply in the blood – as researchers led by Dr habil Miloš Filipović at ISAS recently discovered.

Hydrogen Sulfide: Is This Foul Compound a Fountain of Youth?

What role does hydrogen sulfide play in ageing processes? How does the foul gas affect normal brain function? Dr habil. Miloš Filipović and his team at ISAS are investigating these questions.

Welcome to Wormland: Dunja Petrovic Studies Ageing Processes in Humans

The life cycle of the nematode C. elegans only lasts up to three weeks. This is makes it the perfect model organism for Dunja Petrovic, who is investigating the influence of hydrogen sulfide on ageing.
