Prof. Dr Gülşah Gabriel heads the Viral Zoonoses – One Health Research Department at the Leibniz Institute of Virology in Hamburg. Her research focuses on the interspecies transmission of influenza A viruses from animals to humans and the molecular mechanisms underlying disease pathogenesis in humans. Particular attention is paid to risk factors such as pregnancy, obesity and sex-specific differences.

At the ISAS colloquium on November 4, Gabriel will explore how respiratory viral infections affect the endocrine system and what short- and long-term consequences this may have. In her lecture, ‘Endocrine hits in respiratory virus infections: short- and long-term consequences’, she will examine the links between viral infections and hormonal changes and explain why these are important for understanding the course of the disease.
