For the second time this year, ISAS becomes part of an EU-funded "Innovative Training Network" (ITN) for the joint education of PhD students. The new ITN "TICARDIO - Thrombo-Inflammation in Cardiovascular Disease" focusses on pathological processes in cardiovascular diseases. "TICARDIO" research aims to uncover the highly complex interactions of blood vessel walls and blood during thrombo-inflammatory processes in cardiovascular diseases. In the long term, specific diagnostic markers and new therapeutic target molecules for novel drugs will be developed.
ITNs are European networks for the structured training of young researchers in the scope of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions of the EU Research and Innovation programme Horizon 2020. The European Commission established these networks to promote the international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral mobility and career development of researchers and to increase in Europe's attractiveness as a leading research and innovation destination. The ITN variant EJD (European Joint Doctorate) aims to award joint, double, or even multiple doctoral degrees and to enable the multidisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration of the participating institutions in PhD training. In April, the first ITN with ISAS participation has started: The "TAPAS" network focusses on platelets and their role in thrombosis.
The new ITN "TICARDIO" offers a total of 15 PhD positions for young researchers. It is coordinated by the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH) at the University Medical Center in Mainz; other academic partners besides ISAS are the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM), Netherlands, and the University of Aix-Marseille, France. The European Commission is funding "TICARDIO" for 48 months with a total amount of 4 million Euro.
