We nowadays live longer thanks to medical progress – but are we also able to enjoy our longer lives compared to the generations before us? For the majority of people, higher life expectancies go hand-in-hand with an increasing susceptibility to chronic diseases - often cardiovascular illnesses or dementia.

In addition, the demographic change poses new social and economic challenges for society. The overriding scientific goal of the Leibniz Research Alliance on Healthy Ageing is therefore to explain the biological and social basics of the ageing process and their interactions. This should then help to develop new types of intervention and adaptation strategies to promote sustainable, healthy ageing.
