High-resolution absorption spectrometry

In this project, the Nanostructures group develops and improves high-performance broad range spectrographs based on Echelle gratings. These appliances can mostly be used in atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and similar methods, including plasma emission spectroscopy and, with slight modifications, also Raman spectroscopy.

Amongst other fields, appliances of this type are deployed in environmental metrology and astronomy because they enable the temperature and composition of atmospheric dust particles or luminous celestial bodies to be determined and analysed. But they are also ideal for trace analytics of biologically important elements such as fluorine, phosphorus, sulphur and nitrogen, and are hence also used for biomedical issues.
