Research activities at ISAS Berlin focus on applied optical spectroscopy, in particular the development of new techniques and their application in material science. Close collaborations exist with TU Berlin, the Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing(BAM), the BESSY GmbH and several mid-sized companies, many of them also situated on the WISTA Campus in Adlershof.

A major goal is the development and optimisation of current spectroscopic tools. Fundamental principles are being studied aiming towards either the solution of analytical problems or providing distinct improvements to already established methods. In the different projects the whole bandwidth of optical frequencies, ranging from deep UV to the Mid Infrared, is being utilised to obtain detailed information of the samples under investigation. One example is the development of entire spectrometric configurations or methods according to customer needs, while other projects concentrate on the optimisation of data evaluation or certain details, e. g. single spectrometers, radiation sources or probes. In the future the emphasis will be the use of synchrotron radiation and the implementation of near-field optical spectroscopy with lateral resolution in the nanometer range.
