Second Generation Locator for Urban Search and Rescue Operations (EU-SGL)

The hazardeous earthquake in Haiti in 2010 demonstrated again how important suitable tools for search and rescue of trapped people are.
Especially in poor countries, semi-automatic and easy to handle equipment for the localisation of even single persons in a collapsed building could balance the lack of highly specialised emergency task forces. In this context, the EU project “SGL for USaR” is focussed on the development of methods for the search, rescue and emergency treatment of trapped people after disasters like earth quakes or a terrorist attack. The design of prototypes of integrated visual, acoustic and chemical sensor platforms and the development of related data bases will lead to scenarios which should enable the timely localisation of disaster victims:
• Portable and modular systems for manual search (FIRST – First responder portable device).
• Stationary and automatically operated systems for the observation of a defined area (REDs– Remote Early Detection System).
