Miniaturisation

Miniaturised plasma discharges
The development of miniaturized plasma discharges is strongly requested in analytical sciences. The plasma discharge has to be as small as possible, but their characteristics should be comparable with big laboratory devices. Our group works in integrating a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and a microstructured electrode discharge (MSE) in sensitive detection schemes in order to be able to analyze gaseous, liquid or solid samples. > more

Miniaturised separation techniques
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a widely employed separation technique and known as an orthogonal method to HPLC. Miniaturized CE (CE on chip) has proven the predictions of the scaling laws. For separations in preparative scale, free-flow electrophoresis is more suited due to its continuous operation mode. > more

Miniaturisation for the Life Sciences
Microsystem technologies offer exquisite spatial and temporal control at the same level as cellular processes. This research activity focuses on the development of micropatterning and microfluidic techniques for addressing outstanding challenges in cell biology. > more
