Nanostructures

There is a considerable demand for research on the optical characterization of nano- to mesoscopic structures (e.g. interfaces, ultrathin layers, nanowires, molecule structures). Analytical research on such structures with optical spectroscopy from IR to VUV range needs instrumental developments, numerical simulations on different scales, and comparative studies on model systems.
The Nanostructures group develops and uses optical polarization methods in the IR to VUV range, such as Reflection Anisotropy Spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and the VUV ellipsometer at the electron storage ring BESSY in Berlin, for studies on organic and inorganic model nanostructures. These methods are combined with complementary techniques for surface analysis and with numerical methods.
