Socializing on the „bio.dortmund marketplace“

For the second time in a row ISAS hosted the event "bio.dortmund Marketplace" organized by the City of Dortmund Economic Development Agency together with the BioMedizinZentrum Dortmund and the BioChemGate GmbH. The conference on October 23, 2012 gave insights into current developments and new technologies of the biotech industry in Dortmund. It was also designed to encourage exchange between participants and to create impulses for future cooperation.

About 80 to 90 scientists, entrepreneurs and students visited this year’s "marketplace" to hear keynotes and short talks from Professor Philippe Bastiaens  (Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology), Dr. Alexander Piechot (Taros Chemicals GmbH & Co. KG) and Professor Daniel Rauh (TU Dortmund, chemistry department) and other top-class speakers. The talk topics ranged from specific tumor therapies to the potential of microfluidic systems and to thermodynamics of biological systems, thus displaying the great variety of research projects in Dortmund. The talk program was accompanied by a job board and a poster exhibition, giving mostly younger scientists the opportunity to present their work.

60th Anniversary of ISAS

On October 4th ISAS celebrated its 60th anniversary with a ceremonial act. About 130 guests attended the celebration in the new ISAS building on campus of the TU Dortmund. Among them were Dr. Gerd Bollermann, president of the District Council of Arnsberg, and Professor Metin Tolan, prorector for studies at the TU Dortmund, who gave a short welcoming speech.

Another welcoming speech was given by Dr. Dieter Sommer, ISAS honorary member, who has attended the institute for many years in different offices. He wished the institute „vivat, crescat, floreat”: ISAS may grow, bloom and prosper.

Professor Albert Sickmann, head of the Executive Board, gave an overview on 60 years of ISAS history together with Dr. Alex von Bohlen from the Interface Processes group. Afterwards, Professor Volker Mosbrugger, head of the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung and vice president of the Leibniz Association, congratulated the institute on behalf of Leibniz and gave a fascinating lecture on biodiversity loss and its consequences.

Just on time for the anniversary, ISAS has issued an anniversary brochure with a detailed essay on the institute’s history in the context of social and scientific developments in the Ruhr area and throughout Germany since the end of World War II. The brochure also contains detailed information on a joined project of ISAS and the FH Dortmund: students from the Design Division created ten different artworks for and about ISAS. Two of them are now installed at the ISAS Campus building.

If you wish to get a printed copy of the anniversary brochure (in German only), please contact the ISAS press office.

Girls Day at ISAS

Go for the lab bench: Equipped with white coats, safety goggles and gloves, the girls started on their experiments.

The annual Girls Day took place on April 26th this year. On that day, young girls all over Germany were invited to have a look into typical “men’s jobs” in science or engineering. ISAS participated in the event: Nine girls from the age of 13 got the possibility to look around the ISAS labs and to do some experiments.

The motto of the tour was “Whatever holds the world together – on the trail of small things”. The girls visited the ISAS building on campus of the TU Dortmund to slip into lab coats and experiment with pipettes and solutions. They dipped bananas and tulips into liquid nitrogen, separated DNA fragments on a gel, looked for traces of blood on an old cloth and found out where the employees at ISAS leave most bacteria.

Afterwards, the group had lunch at the University cafeteria, and at the end of their visit, they heard a talk about job paths in science at the nearby Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology.

Meeting of the Leibniz Administration Commission

On April 19 and 20, the Administration Commission of the Leibniz Association met at ISAS in Dortmund. The commission assembles the heads of administration of all Leibniz institutes. The meeting provided a platform to exchange knowledge and experiences concerning administrative issues and to discuss topics such as governance and technology transfer.

19th User Meeting on X-ray Fluorescence at ISAS

The "19th User Meeting on X-ray Fluorescence and Spark Emission Spectroscopy" took place at ISAS Campus in Dortmund on March 6th and 7th. About 120 scientists attended the meeting. For more information on the program and the discussed topics, please check the > PDF file (in German only).
